In the Summer of 1978 I worked on shift in a computer operations support group with responsbility for batch scheduling and analysis of job performance.
I first learnt PL/I, JCL and some MVS utilities while working in this group.
In the Summer of 1977 I worked on shift as a mainframe computer operator
Initially as a vacation student, then a pre-University student I worked in the group responsible for managing the daily batch processing of orders from within Europe.
I wrote my first ever email while working in this group.
It was during this first period at IBM that I realised I wanted to be a computer programmer rather than a chemist.
